About the event

1 in 6 Californian adults live at home with a firearm. Even with California's strong gun laws and regulations, issues of gun safety and fears of gun violence remain.

Join us for a virtual briefing on some of the latest research into firearm ownership in California with guest speaker Sean Tan, a Senior Public Administration Analyst at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.

For the first time since 2001, the 2021 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) conducted by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research includes questions about gun ownership, safety, and gun violence. CHIS is the nation's largest statewide health survey with over 22,000 respondents and provides a variety of health and well-being indicators. Amid the troubling trends surrounding gun violence and safety around the country, the latest CHIS offers new research possibilities for examining current trends in California, especially for priority populations or populations of interest such as teens and young adults, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants and veterans in the state. This module is made possible by a grant award from the National Consortium on Gun Violence Research (NCGVR) and by the CHIS NCGVR Working Group.

Sean Tan specializes in research and policy analysis surrounding health insurance markets, health care coverage and access to care, and health equity research for priority populations. Sean will be discussing the latest estimates and findings on gun ownership, safety, and gun violence from the 2021 CHIS. More information regarding the presentation and its findings are available on the Center's web page and health policy fact sheet.
