Nicole Hockley, co-founder and co-CEO of Sandy Hook Promise, chose to transform unspeakable grief and anguish into action after her youngest son, Dylan, was murdered in his first-grade classroom during the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.
Following the latest school shooting in Winder, Georgia on September 4, 2024, Nicole released the following letter:
Friend,
This afternoon, my heart shattered when I learned that at least four people were killed and at least 9 others were injured during a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia.
Once again, parents are living the nightmare of sending their children to school, only to never have them come home. I know that horror and that grief. It’s an unspeakable agony that no family should ever have to experience.
We must reject the notion that these kinds of violent acts are inevitable – because gun violence is preventable. But we must be courageous and renew our resolve to take action to put an end to this epidemic.
So today, I’m asking you to join us in wrapping those affected by this tragedy in love – and sharing our promise to continue doing everything we possibly can to prevent gun violence in every community across the country. We’ll be sending them a card as soon as possible, so please, will you add your name now?
The best way to honor these precious lives taken today – and all those taken by gun violence – is to do everything we can to prevent these tragedies from happening to more families and more communities.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for standing with us in the work ahead.
With love,
Nicole Hockley (Dylan’s mom)
